The discography of the Grateful Dead contains more than 200 album, most of which were recorded live in concert. [1][2] The band also has a number singles and videos.
In 1965, the San Francisco Bay Area witnessed the birth of The Grateful Dead amid the counterculture in the 1960s. Their music has evolved tremendously over the years, with many musical influences. They were a pioneer in jamband music and made extensive use improvisation. Jerry Garcia was the founding member, with vocals and guitar, Bob Weir on vocals and guitar, Phil Lesh on bass, vocals and drums, Bill Kreutzmann on drums and Ron "Pigpen” McKernan on vocals and organ. Pigpen passed away in 1973. The other four members remained with the group for the entire 30 year history. For most of that period, second drummer Mickey Hart also remained with the band. Other band members included keyboardists Tom Constanten and Keith Godchaux, Vince Welnick and Vince Mydland. Donna Jean Godchaux was also a vocalist.
From 1965 to 1995, thirteen studio albums were released by the Grateful Dead, as well as nine live albums. These nine live albums, which were recorded recently, mostly contain previously unreleased material. They were a part of the band's evolution and played the traditional role of studio albums. (The second album of The Dead, Anthem of the Sun was an experimental mix of live and studio material.
The band began releasing live retrospective albums in 1991. This practice has been continued until today. These albums are available in several versions. Remixes of multitrack recordings from concerts created the "traditional" live albums. From 1993 to 2005, a second series of live albums was Dick's Picks. These were concert recordings chosen for their musical excellence, but recorded using stereo records that didn't allow different musical parts to being remixed. In 2005 and 2006, another series of albums were released as digital downloads. The Road Trips series followed, with Dave's Picks starting in 2012.
Some of the Grateful Dead's video album releases were made as audio CDs or concert DVDs. Others were only available on video. There were also some that were released exclusively on video. There have been several compilation albums as well as box sets.
